Japanese Tanuki Figure, circa 1980
Decorative Japanese tanuki figure dating from around 1980, featuring an expressive design and a striking combination of dark glazes, light earthy tones and warm reddish-brown accents.
Dimensions: H 27.5 × W 21 × D 17.5 cm
This tanuki is crafted in the traditional style of Shigaraki earthenware and wears a large reddish-brown hat. Its rounded belly, lively facial expression and raised paw give the figure a playful character. The sculpture is richly detailed with traditional attributes, including a sake bottle, a golden ornament with Japanese characters and a small account book.
In Japanese folklore, the tanuki symbolises good fortune, prosperity and hospitality. These figures are traditionally placed outside homes, shops and restaurants to attract luck and wealth.
A charming and characterful example from the Shōwa period, with warm colours and distinctive details that make it a beautiful addition to both Japanese-inspired and contemporary interiors.
Good vintage condition with minor signs of wear and ageing consistent with its age.
