Japanese Vintage Medicine Box ‘Kateiyaku’, 1950s
This charming Japanese medicine chest from the 1950s is made entirely of wood, including the drawer with its metal pull handle.
Dimensions: height 12 cm, width 20 cm, depth 22 cm.
The piece is finished in a vibrant mustard-yellow tone and decorated with paper labels on multiple sides, giving it a distinctly graphic, vintage look.
The large inscription on top reads 家庭薬 (kateiyaku), meaning “home medicine” — a clear reference to its original use as a household medicine box.
Additional labels on the sides refer to medicinal products, including pain relief and toothache remedies. A small red cross symbol reinforces its medical context.
The wood has developed a beautiful patina, with natural wear and fading that highlight its age and authenticity.
Today it makes a wonderful decorative and functional storage box — ideal for pens, stationery, sewing supplies, keys, cables, herbs, tea, or small collectibles. A subtle Japanese accent with genuine vintage character.
