Japanese Go-Ban Game Table / Low Display Table, 1930s
An old Japanese go-ban, a solid wooden game table for the game of Go, with a deep reddish-brown patina and a beautifully aged surface.
Dimensions: height 21 cm, width 45.5 cm, depth 41 cm.
The thick wooden top rests on four sturdy rounded legs and features a classic playing grid. The lines, star points, scratches and darker traces of use show how the board has been handled and played over the years. The warm colour of the wood ranges from honey brown to deep reddish brown, with a soft sheen and subtle wear along the edges and sides.
Originally made as a game table for Go, this piece now works beautifully as a low display table. It is ideal as a quiet base for ceramics, books, a bonsai, a plant or a refined arrangement with tea objects. It also sits naturally in a tea ceremony-inspired setting, thanks to its low and understated presence.
The underside shows the traditional construction with four short legs and a central recess. The combination of graphic lines, solid wood and natural age patina gives this object a strong yet restrained Japanese character.
In beautiful vintage condition, with normal signs of use, scratches, small marks and patina consistent with age and use.
Solid, functional and highly decorative.
