Japanese Hotei, Laughing Buddha, Carved from Solid Birch Wood, 1950s
This beautiful, smiling figure depicts Hotei, often referred to as the “Laughing Buddha.” In Buddhist tradition, Hotei symbolises contentment, generosity, and abundance—a protective, joyful presence associated with lightness, happiness, and good fortune. In Japan he is also linked to prosperity and is believed to bring positive energy to a home or business.
Dimensions: height 42 cm, width 21 cm, depth 16 cm.
Carved from a single piece of wood, the sculpture stands out for the quality of its workmanship: the expressive face, the soft folds of the robe, and the rounded volumes are shaped with great sensitivity. Over the years, the birch wood has developed a warm, glossy patina through handling and time, adding depth and character to the piece.
The base is particularly striking: the original trunk is still visible, complete with natural birch bark, giving the sculpture a strong and authentic presence. The contrast between the raw bark and the smoothly patinated, finely carved surface makes it especially appealing and creates a beautiful organic statement in any interior.
A unique decorative object that works effortlessly as a statement piece in both minimalist and eclectic settings, with a serene yet playful character.
