Japanese Wooden Tabako-bon, circa 1980
Traditional Japanese tabako-bon dating from around 1980, crafted from light-coloured wood with black metal corner fittings and an elegantly shaped carrying handle.
Dimensions: H 20 × W 26 × D 15.5 cm
A tabako-bon was originally used as a portable smoking set for storing tobacco, pipes and related accessories. The removable cast-iron container served as a small charcoal brazier, holding glowing embers used to light a traditional Japanese kiseru pipe. The covered compartment and spacious drawer provided storage for tobacco and smoking accessories.
The natural wood grain, simple construction and contrasting black metal details give the piece an understated, functional character, typical of traditional Japanese everyday objects.
Today, this tabako-bon makes a distinctive decorative piece and can also be used to store stationery, small accessories or personal belongings. A characterful accent for a Japanese-inspired, wabi-sabi or minimalist interior.
Good vintage condition with minor scratches and small signs of wear consistent with age.
