Japanese “Matsuura” Bamboo Basket with Lid, 1950s
Decorative, handwoven bamboo basket from Japan, resting on four bamboo supports and complete with a matching lid.
Dimensions: height 21 cm, diameter 32 cm.
The weaving is fine, regular and beautifully executed in warm honey and chestnut-brown tones. The rim is reinforced with a broader bamboo ring, giving the basket an extra artisanal character.
The lid features a radiating pattern of wide bamboo strips – a typical detail of quality baskets from the Matsuura workshops. The interior is spacious and tightly woven, while the four short, solid bamboo legs give the piece a charming, almost sculptural presence. The underside shows strong, intricate weaving with a characteristic cross pattern of broad bamboo strips, a hallmark of traditional quality baskets.
In very good condition with minimal signs of age and use.
Perfect for storing fruit, bread or textiles, yet just as beautiful as a decorative object on a table, sideboard or open shelf. A stylish, traditional Japanese interior accent that instantly adds warmth and authenticity to any space.
