Product Details

A richly decorated Japanese mikoshi, a portable Shinto shrine with red lacquer, gilt metal fittings, and an elegant bird finial on the roof.

Dimensions: height 90 cm, width 55 cm, depth 55 cm. Weight: 14.5 kg.

This Japanese mikoshi was traditionally used during matsuri festivals, where a portable shrine temporarily housed the kami and was carried by the community. The object is built as a miniature shrine, with a raised base, open railing, ritual red accents, and a richly decorated roof with upward-curving corners.

Several classic Shinto elements are visible throughout the piece, including mitsudomoe emblems, decorative metal fittings, and a bird-shaped finial referring to the hō-ō, the Japanese phoenix. The square openings in the base refer to the original carrying construction, where poles would have been inserted.

The mikoshi consists of two parts: a lower section and an upper section. This makes the object more practical for transport and placement. The combination of black, red, and gold gives the piece a strong, almost theatrical presence.

The object is in very beautiful used condition, with normal signs of age. Light wear to the lacquer, patina and ageing on the metal, and small irregularities in the finish are consistent with its age and ritual character.

Today, this mikoshi is especially suited as a decorative and architectural statement piece. Its size makes it highly placeable in an interior, gallery, shop display, or museum-style setting. A powerful Japanese object combining religious symbolism, craftsmanship, and sculptural presence.
