This rice mortar was traditionally used in making mochi, a Japanese rice dessert. Mochi is made by pounding glutinous rice into a sticky dough ball. Using the wooden pestle, the rice is finely pounded and kneaded into a sticky mass. This process requires strength and patience, as the rice grains must be thoroughly processed into a cohesive dough.
