Product Details

Distinctive Japanese papier-mâché figure dating from around 1960, featuring a richly painted ceremonial robe and a striking tall black hat.

Dimensions: H 23 × W 10.5 × D 11.5 cm

The figure most likely represents Sanbasō, a traditional dancer from Japanese Nō and Kyōgen theatre. This ritual dance has been performed for centuries as a symbol of prosperity, fertility and a good harvest.

The doll wears a black robe decorated with hand-painted cranes and colourful botanical motifs. The dark mask, tall hat and elegant fan on the back give the figure a distinctive character. The refined details and vivid colour contrasts highlight the handcrafted nature of the papier-mâché.

A red Japanese stamp can be found on the underside. The figure is a distinctive example of traditional Japanese folk craftsmanship and makes a refined decorative accent in Japanese-inspired, wabi-sabi or eclectic interiors.

Good vintage condition with visible signs of wear, areas of paint loss and minor irregularities consistent with age.
