Japanese Porcelain Ikebana Vase, Sometsuke, by Asahina, 1970s

This refined ikebana vase is made of bright white porcelain and features a softly rounded body with a gently flaring neck.

Dimensions: height 24 cm, diameter 16 cm. The vase is in perfect condition.

The decoration is hand-painted in classic sometsuke (cobalt-blue underglaze) with a stylised floral motif: open, circular flower forms in deep blue, accented with warm brown-amber tones at the centre of the blossoms. The brushwork is loose and expressive, giving the decoration a character that is both graphic and playful. The contrast between the crisp white ground and the intense blue creates a timeless appearance that fits effortlessly into both minimalist and eclectic interiors.

The vase comes with its original tomobako. The inscription reads “vase with blue-and-white floral decoration” and “made by Asahina,” confirming the maker and provenance. An impressed seal on the base provides an additional, subtle mark of authenticity.

In contemporary use, this piece is ideal for ikebana or for a restrained, elegant floral arrangement—just a few branches, seasonal flowers, or even simple greenery are sufficient. Even without flowers, the vase functions beautifully as a refined interior accent on a sideboard, table, or open shelving, where its white surface and graphic blue decoration immediately bring light and rhythm into the space.
