Antique Japanese Room Divider, Hand-Carved Ranma Screen with Cranes, 1920s.
This exquisite Japanese room divider, also known as tsuitate (衝立), is a unique piece that combines traditional Japanese aesthetics with masterful craftsmanship. The screen is composed of two antique ranma (欄間) panels, crafted in the 1920s.
These dark-toned panels have been carefully integrated into a modern, light-colored wooden frame, creating a refined balance between classic and contemporary design.
The ranma panels feature beautifully hand-carved motifs of cranes and pine trees—both traditional symbols of luck, longevity, and strength in Japanese culture. The intricate carvings bring the dynamic movement of the cranes and the graceful lines of the pines to life. The central section of the divider is adorned with delicate latticework, lending an airy, calming presence while allowing subtle light filtration.
