Japanese Saru Mingei Wood Figure, ‘Monkey with Young’, 1940s
Japanese wooden sculpture of a monkey with its young – an expressive, hand-carved piece that immediately evokes the Mingei tradition, where simplicity, craftsmanship and the beauty of everyday objects are central.
Dimensions: height 23 cm, width 16 cm, depth 7 cm.
The figure shows a mother monkey holding her young protectively close. In Japan this motif carries clear symbolism: monkeys (saru) are seen as protectors of children and bringers of good fortune, symbolising care, safety and maternal love.
The sculpture is roughly carved from a single block of wood, with clearly visible chisel marks that give it a strong, rugged texture and an authentic presence. The warm, reddish-brown patina enhances both its age and its handmade character. The simple forms, incised lines and powerful silhouette fit perfectly within the spirit of Mingei folk art.
A unique, understated interior accent that brings a sense of calm, along with a subtle symbolism of protection and connectedness.
