Small Japanese Jubako, Keyaki Wood with Gold Decoration, 1970s
Elegant, compact Japanese jubako – a traditional stackable box.
Dimensions: height 17 cm, width 19 cm, depth 20 cm.
This piece was made by Keyaki Kōgei Yamato, a workshop specializing in furniture and objects crafted from keyaki wood.
The jubako consists of three square tiers and a loose lid held within an elegant carrying frame. The wood is finished with a transparent reddish-brown lacquer that beautifully reveals the lively grain of the keyaki. The lid is decorated with a delicate gold motif of flowers and grasses, combined with black areas with subtle sparkles, reminiscent of classic maki-e techniques. The interior of the tiers is finished in a deep dark lacquer, allowing the contents to stand out clearly against the background.
Today this is a highly decorative object that integrates easily into a modern interior. Beautiful as a jewellery box, for tea bags or sweets, for small accessories on a sideboard, or as an elegant organiser on a desk or dressing table. Thanks to its clean shape and warm wood, the jubako works as a small sculptural accent even when simply closed.
The jubako is in perfect condition, with a deep, glossy lacquer surface.
