Kokeshi Ainu “Nipopo” – Abashiri Prison, Hokkaidō, 1960s
Authentic Nipopo (“little wooden child”) from the Ainu tradition, produced in the workshops of Abashiri Prison, Hokkaidō—the underside stamp (網走刑務所) confirms the origin. The design is strikingly modernist: a faceted robe, ring-like “collar,” and a serene, stylized face.
Dimensions: height 32 cm, diameter 11 cm.
Carved from solid keyaki/zelkova hardwood with a pronounced flame grain that flows beautifully across the planes. Its warm, nut-brown tone and soft satin sheen give the piece a refined presence that sits effortlessly in a contemporary interior.
In Hokkaidō, Nipopo figures are regarded as talismans of good luck and protection. This example pairs that symbolism with strong decorative appeal and notable collectability thanks to the clear Abashiri mark.
Note: “Nipopo” is the Ainu term meaning “little wooden child.” Abashiri Prison is well known for these wooden amulets, traditionally made by inmates and sold locally.
