Reclining Japanese Child Doll, 1960s, Japan

A distinctive Japanese child doll, complete with its original box from Asakusa Toy & Dolls (ATD).

Dimensions: height 13 cm, width 27 cm, depth 15 cm.

The child rests on a red cushion, dressed in a deep purple kimono patterned with dice. In Japan, this motif is associated with luck and growth: every roll reveals a pip, or ‘eye’, a word that sounds like the Japanese word for a new shoot. The glass eyes, soft blush and finely modelled hands and feet give the doll a lifelike presence. With its original box, it is a lovely collector’s piece and an unexpected detail among art and curiosities in an eclectic interior.

The doll is in lovely vintage condition.

The original box shows more pronounced wear, with tears and damaged corners.
