Minimalist Wooden Fumidai Step, Japan, 1920s

This antique Japanese fumidai (a small step used to reach higher shelves or storage areas) is a great example of pure, functional design. The shape is simple and solid: a wide, stable base with a sturdy top board that slightly overhangs. On the side there is a round cut-out that doubles as a handhold, making it easy to move around.

Over time, the wood has developed a deep, warm patina. The grain pattern is beautifully graphic, and the top surface shows clear signs of wear and discoloration from decades of everyday use.
