Monumental Japanese Terracotta Tsubo Jar, 1960s

This monumental Japanese terracotta jar has a wide, almost spherical body, a stable foot, and a generous opening with a thickened rim. Dimensions: height 85 cm, diameter 75 cm. Weight: 53 kg.

What makes this piece immediately distinctive is the finely executed relief on the shoulder. A richly hand-carved decorative band wraps around the jar, featuring repeating leaf motifs in relief. Below it runs a second band with evenly spaced, round applied knobs. The surface is unglazed and warm in tone, with natural variations in red and rust-brown. Up close, you can see subtle wheel marks and hand traces in the clay.

Traditionally, large jars of this type relate to functional storage vessels, used for keeping water or provisions. Today, it works beautifully as a sculptural statement piece—ideal for an entry hall, loft, gallery, or shop space, where it can stand as a monumental floor vase with a few long branches or a restrained arrangement. It also looks striking outdoors, on a terrace or in a patio.
