Onta Yaki Ceramic Plate – Japan, ca. 1950

This striking Japanese ceramic plate is a beautiful example of Onta Yaki – a traditional pottery style originating from the mountain village of Onta in Kyushu. Onta Yaki is renowned for its timeless simplicity, robust forms, and handcrafted decoration, often created using wooden or bamboo tools.

The interior of the plate is adorned with a mesmerizing radial pattern of fine vertical incisions that radiate outward like sunbeams from the center. This texture is enhanced by a subtle wave motif along the rim – a characteristic detail of the Onta tradition. The glaze features warm, natural tones ranging from cream and sand to rich earthy brown, with a soft sheen that accentuates the depth of the surface.

The underside is glazed in a deep chocolate brown, with an unglazed, sandy-colored foot that bears a potter’s stamp (小鹿田焼

Onta-yaki).
