Product Details

This cylindrical ikebana vase (花入 hanaire) is made in the traditional Bizen style and is signed on the base by Kurosawa Izumi, having been fired in the Taikoku-gama kiln.

Dimensions: height 25 cm, diameter 13 cm. Signed on the base.

The vase has a strong, understated form with a slightly thickened rim and a well-balanced mouth, ideal for natural ikebana arrangements. The surface shows a pronounced hi-iro (fire-finish patina): warm reddish-brown flame markings flow across a cool grey, almost metallic-looking base. The rough, granular texture is characteristic of unglazed Bizen clay and gives the piece depth and a tactile presence.

On both sides are small, organically shaped “ears” (mimi 耳), adding character to the silhouette. Just below the neck runs a subtle incised groove encircling the body, refining the profile and catching the light beautifully across the surface. The interior is unglazed as well.

This hanaire comes with its original tomo-bako (共箱) wooden storage box, inscribed 花入 (hanaire) and 黒沢泉 (Kurosawa Izumi), complete with the red seal, as well as the accompanying orange protective cloth (fukusa 布巾) with stamped mark.

In perfect condition. Beautiful as a sculptural object on its own, and even more striking when paired with branches, grasses, or flowers in a natural ikebana display.
