Organic Japanese Tokoname Stoneware Storage Jar, 1900s

A large Japanese storage jar (kame/tsubo) in stoneware, with a calm, powerful silhouette and a beautifully organic surface.

Dimensions: height 46 cm, diameter 32 cm.

The broad shoulder is finished all around with incised bands (kushime), a detail that subtly breaks up the volume and adds texture. The glaze is a soft olive green with darker, iron-toned accents along the rim and shoulder, with natural variation that rewards a closer look.

Today, this is a strong wabi-sabi interior piece: placed on the floor beside a low cabinet, in an entryway, or simply as a sculptural object on its own. It also works beautifully as a vase for a few long branches, dried stems, or a restrained, asymmetrical arrangement. A statement that doesn’t shout, yet instantly holds the space.
