Old Japanese Tea Chest with Newspaper Covering, ca. 1950–1970
A distinctive old Japanese storage chest, used for keeping tea, herbs or other dry goods. The chest dates from the Shōwa period, presumably ca. 1950–1970, and has a highly decorative appearance thanks to its covering of Japanese newspaper fragments and advertisements.
Dimensions: height 49 cm, width 68 cm, depth 43.5 cm.
The exterior is fully covered with Japanese newspapers, featuring black typography, advertisements, illustrations and small images on a warm beige background. The closely arranged newspaper strips create a lively graphic pattern that feels historical, playful and very stylish at the same time.
The newspaper covering has been varnished, which helps protect the surface from wear and gives it a beautiful, lightly glossy patina. The interior is lined with aluminium or metal, supporting its original function as a practical storage chest.
Thanks to its generous size, this piece is ideal today as a decorative storage chest for textiles, magazines, documents, shop materials or other objects. It also works beautifully as a plant stand, low display chest or decorative element in a retail interior.
The chest is in beautiful vintage condition, with normal signs of age, small traces of use and patina consistent with its age, material and use.
A unique and atmospheric Japanese object with a strong graphic presence. The combination of varnished newspaper, metal interior lining and Japanese typography makes this chest a characterful interior accent for a Japanese, wabi-sabi, vintage, industrial or eclectic interior.
