Pair of Antique Japanese Carved Temple Elements, Meiji Period, 1868–1912
Dimensions: 194 × 38 × 4.5 cm and 225 × 44.5 × 5.5 cm.
An impressive pair of antique Japanese architectural elements originating from a Buddhist temple and dating from the Meiji period, 1868–1912.
Both panels are crafted from heavy solid wood and carved entirely by hand. Their elongated forms are decorated with gracefully curling lines and openwork motifs reminiscent of stylised clouds, waves and botanical ornamentation.
The asymmetrical composition gives each panel an individual character, while their shared visual language unites them as a harmonious pair. Deeply carved details create a beautiful interplay of light and shadow and emphasise the quality of the traditional Japanese woodwork.
Through age and original use, the timber has developed a warm and deep patina. Subtle variations in colour, wear, minor losses and natural irregularities enhance its authentic and timeworn character.
These elements most likely once formed part of the wooden architecture or decorative interior of a Japanese Buddhist temple. Today, they make striking monumental wall objects, freestanding sculptural elements or architectural accents in a spacious entrance hall, living room, gallery or shop interior.
In attractive antique condition, with normal signs of age, wear, discolouration, minor losses and natural cracks consistent with the 1868–1912 period, the material and their original function.
Due to their size and weight, collection from our Antwerp store is preferred. Domestic and international delivery can be arranged following consultation via info@blackmarket.earth.
An exceptionally decorative pair of Japanese temple elements from the Meiji period, combining architecture, traditional craftsmanship and a beautifully weathered wooden surface.
