Pair of Monumental Japanese Hinoki Temple Beams, Edo Period, 1700–1799
Dimensions per beam: length approx. 290 cm, maximum width approx. 40 cm, thickness approx. 20 cm.
An exceptional pair of monumental Japanese wooden beams dating from the Edo period, 1700–1799, originally made as structural or supporting elements within a traditional temple building.
The construction recesses, mortise-and-tenon joints and traces of former metal fittings clearly reflect their original architectural function. Although their precise position within the building can no longer be determined, the beams most likely formed part of a roof, supporting framework or covered structure.
Both elements have a powerful elongated form with gently curving contours. Centuries of use, exposure and natural ageing have given the wood an exceptionally rich patina. Deep grain patterns, worn areas, old cracks, knots, cavities and darkened sections combine to create a lively surface on which the history of the material remains clearly visible.
The beams were most likely made from hinoki, the Japanese cypress traditionally used for high-quality temple architecture. This timber was valued for its durability, stability, refined grain and its ability to age with remarkable beauty.
Beyond their historic function, the beams now possess a distinctly sculptural and almost landscape-like presence. Their flowing silhouettes evoke natural formations, weathered driftwood or abstract Japanese sculpture.
They can be displayed horizontally on the floor, positioned against a wall or mounted as a suspended installation using a suitable professional support system. Their monumental scale makes them particularly striking in a spacious entrance hall, loft, gallery, showroom, hotel, restaurant or minimalist interior.
In attractive and authentic antique condition, with pronounced wear, old drying cracks, cavities, losses, traces of former fittings and irregularities consistent with more than two centuries of age and their original architectural function.
The metal stands visible in some photographs are used solely for presentation and are not included.
