Set of Three Hand-Carved Hanuman Monkey Masks – 1950s–1960s, Nepal
Set of three hand-carved wooden monkey masks from the Himalayan region, featuring expressive designs and a beautifully aged appearance.
Dimensions of the largest mask: H 31 × W 20 × D 13 cm
Each mask has its own distinctive shape and retains its original painted finish in shades of green, red and warm earthy tones. Two feature prominent ears, large eyes and elongated snouts. The third, with its brown patina, stands out for its broad grin and carved teeth. All three have eye openings and attachment points.
Their design bears strong similarities to traditional Hanuman masks from Nepal, particularly Eastern Nepal. Hanuman, the monkey deity in Hindu tradition, symbolises strength, loyalty and protection. Such masks were also traditionally placed near homes to ward off negative influences.
A unique and highly decorative set, beautiful as wall art or displayed alongside other ethnographic objects. Their expressive forms and authentic patina create a striking accent in both classic and contemporary interiors.
Good vintage condition with normal signs of age, areas of paint wear and some natural drying cracks caused by the movement of the wood, none of which detract from their decorative appeal.
