Set of Japanese Granite Tanuki Garden Statues, 1960s

A remarkable pair of Japanese tanuki, one male and one female, hand-carved from solid granite. Japan, Shōwa period.
Dimensions per statue: height 32 cm, width 30 cm, depth 28 cm. Weight: 40 kg and 34 kg.

These substantial stone figures have a strong folkloric character, with rounded volumes, simple facial features and clearly visible hand-carved detailing. Together they form an exceptional decorative pair.

Tanuki are among the most recognisable figures in Japanese folk culture and are traditionally associated with good fortune, prosperity and hospitality. Beautiful as an authentic Japanese accent in a garden, on a terrace or in a courtyard. When placed outdoors, the granite will continue to develop an attractive natural patina over time.

In very good vintage condition. One figure has a small old chip to the ear, subtle and barely noticeable within the overall appearance.
