Set of Kokeshi Dolls by Sugawara Satoshi – Tōgatta Style, 1970s
A rare set of two traditional kokeshi dolls, handcrafted by master artisan Sugawara Satoshi (b. 1937), a respected kokeshi maker from the Tōgatta region. The son of renowned kokeshi master Sugawara Shoshichi, he is celebrated for his precise craftsmanship and dedication to the classic Tōgatta style.
Dimensions per doll: height 13 cm, diameter 6 cm. In perfect condition.
Each doll features a distinctive floral motif: one is adorned with a red ume (plum blossom), symbolizing resilience and purity, while the other displays an elegant peach – a recurring theme in Sugawara’s work representing good fortune and longevity.
Delicately finished with hand-painted faces and graceful simplicity, these kokeshi exude warmth and timeless charm.
Both dolls are hand-signed by the artist on the base.
