Set of Round Japanese Urushi Lacquer Trays, Niigata, 1920s
A set of two round Japanese lacquered wooden trays, complete with the original inner and outer packaging.
Dimensions: height 2 cm, diameter 25.5 cm and 24 cm.
The trays nest elegantly and feature a deep, warm brown-black lacquer with a soft, calm sheen. The decoration is refined: one tray shows a band of red incised floral motifs, while the other carries a more subtle brown ornament. Both are finished with gold-toned vines and leaves, giving the set a restrained yet rich presence.
The provenance is exceptionally well preserved. The packaging reads “新潟縣白根町 太興商店” (Niigata, Shirone – Taikō Shōten) and “御膳二枚入” (two trays included). The undersides bear a red inspection seal “合格 漆器 検査”, meaning “approved – lacquerware – inspection”.
Dating: ca. 1910–1930. Condition: very good, with light signs of age and fine surface marks; sturdy and fully functional.
A rare, complete pair with original packaging, equally compelling as a serving set and as a collectible.
