Vintage Dance Katana, Speckled Lacquer, Buyōtō, 1960s, Japan
A Japanese theatre and dance katana (buyōtō) from the 1960s, featuring a striking lacquered wooden scabbard, richly decorated metal fittings and an elegant, traditional design.
Dimensions: H 105 × W 7.5 × D 8 cm.
The gracefully curved wooden scabbard (saya) is finished in deep black lacquer, decorated with a lively pattern of red-orange speckles in varying sizes. The warm colour accents and glossy finish give the sword a distinctive decorative character.
The handle is traditionally wrapped in golden-brown cord over a light, textured base. Dark metal ornaments are set between the bindings, while the pommel is also adorned with elegant relief decoration.
A particularly striking detail is the round metal handguard (tsuba), richly decorated with dragons moving among stylised clouds. The silver-coloured relief details contrast beautifully with the dark background and the warm tones of the handle.
The metal blade has a polished finish with a clearly visible, wavy hamon line, applied decoratively in reference to the traditional tempering line found on Japanese katana swords.
A golden-brown fastening cord (sageo), finished with decorative knots, complements the handle and dark lacquered scabbard.
In attractive vintage condition, with light signs of use and age to the lacquerwork, blade and metal fittings.
A characterful collector's piece bringing together Japanese sword traditions and the aesthetics of theatre and dance. A striking decorative accent for an interior and a beautiful addition to a collection of Japanese katana swords.
