Daruma Kokeshi by Gōno Seifū, 1980s, Japan

A distinctive Japanese wooden Daruma from the 1980s, created by the artist Gōno Seifū, known for his expressive Daruma figures.

Dimensions: H 18 × Ø 9 cm.

The rounded figure is hand-painted in warm wood tones, deep black and rich shades of red. Particularly striking are the delicate brushstrokes that define the full beard and decorative details.

Inspired by the Buddhist monk Bodhidharma, the Daruma is a traditional Japanese symbol of perseverance, determination and good fortune.

Unsigned and in lovely vintage condition, with minor signs of age.

A beautifully decorative example of Japanese folk art, with a bold, almost graphic quality.
