Vintage Japanese Wooden Letter Holder with Crab and Telephone, 1960s
This unique vintage Japanese wall hanger dates from the 1960s. The object is hand-carved and painted wood, with two open compartments for letters, notes, small documents or cards. At the top, a red crab appears in relief, as if holding a small piece of paper. Below, an old red telephone is carved into the design, with stylised green pine trees behind it.
Dimensions: height 36 cm, width 15 cm, depth 6 cm.
The text refers to health, study and work, and reads like a small encouragement to remain steady and dedicated in those areas. This gives the object a charming, almost personal atmosphere.
The combination of folk art, humour and practical use makes this a particularly decorative Japanese object. It works beautifully as a letter holder in a hallway, office or kitchen, but also as a small sculptural wall object in a stylish contemporary interior. The weathered paint, visible signs of use and hand-carved details give the piece a warm, authentic character.
The back is fitted with a hanging attachment, making it easy to mount on the wall.
In beautiful vintage condition, with patina, wear, small imperfections and natural ageing consistent with age and use.
A rare and playful Japanese wall object that beautifully combines function, character and graphic charm.
