Vintage Japanese Wooden Fumidai Step Stool with Storage Compartment, 1950s
This vintage fumidai is a solid, compact step stool in dark wood, with a calm, functional silhouette.
Dimensions: height 47 cm, width 38 cm, depth 25 cm.
The piece is built from two wide, gently tapered side panels that create a broad, stable base. On top sits a thick, slightly rounded platform. Just beneath it, a neatly shaped cut-out detail lightens the form and adds a subtle decorative touch.
At the front, there is a removable panel with a small finger notch. Behind it, you’ll find a concealed storage compartment—practical for small cleaning items, a cloth, a brush, matches, cables, or any everyday bits you prefer to keep out of sight. The wide horizontal bar at mid-height works as an extra step or footrest and makes the stool comfortable to use.
Today, it remains genuinely useful around the home, while also working beautifully as a styling object—next to a low cabinet, in a dressing area or bathroom, or as a small display stand for ceramics, plants, or ikebana.
Condition: very good, sturdy condition with light signs of use consistent with age.
