Vintage Japanese Wooden Shipping Crate with Red Lettering, 1960s

Characterful wooden crate from Japan with its original red stencilled lettering on the front. The text refers to a registered agricultural product from the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture and notes “500g × 40 入” – forty packages of 500 grams. The producer’s name is printed along the bottom: a nice blend of graphic design and everyday trade history in one object.

The crate is made from light-coloured wood with visible grain and a warm, natural tone. The red Japanese characters create a strong graphic, decorative effect.

In a contemporary interior this is a very versatile piece. Use it as a storage box for blankets, magazines or toys, or as a cool basket for scarves and shoes in the hallway. With a few plant pots inside it becomes an original planter, and in a studio or workspace it’s perfect for storing paper rolls, drawing materials or books.
