Vintage Japanese Ceramic Tanuki with Money Tablet, 1960s–1970s

Decorative vintage Japanese tanuki, made of glazed ceramic and likely dating from the 1960s–1970s.

Dimensions: height 37 cm, width 25 cm, depth 20 cm.

The tanuki is richly detailed with a large straw hat, round belly, expressive eyes and a money tablet held in one paw. The tablet bears the characters 千万両, read as senman ryō, a symbolic reference to great wealth, prosperity and business luck.

Tanuki figures are well-known Japanese good-luck symbols, traditionally associated with hospitality, commercial success and protection. With its lively expression, warm glaze colours and playful symbolism, this piece is highly decorative.

Beautiful as an eye-catching object in a shop interior, entrance hall, display cabinet or Japanese-inspired interior.
