Vintage Japanese Seto Ceramic Ikebana Vase, 1960–1970

This vintage Japanese ceramic vase has a full, rounded body, a narrowed neck and a wide, gently flared mouth.

Dimensions: height 21 cm, diameter 20 cm.

The form is strong yet understated, with two small hand-shaped lug handles on the sides.

The glaze shows a beautiful interplay of deep blue, black-brown and warm ochre tones. The firing process has created natural, almost landscape-like patterns, with both matte and subtly glossy areas that give the surface great depth. The vase comes with its original tomobako and a leaflet indicating that it most likely comes from the Seto kiln, part of a Japanese ceramic tradition with a long history.

The wide opening makes the piece very suitable as an ikebana vase, yet even without flowers it has enough presence as a decorative ceramic object. Beautiful on a low cabinet, table, pedestal or in a contemporary interior where texture, colour and craftsmanship are central.
