Vintage Sōsaku Kokeshi “Shimoyo” by Murakami Ken-ichi, 1960s

Vintage sōsaku kokeshi titled “Shimoyo”, meaning “cold night”, created by Murakami Ken-ichi.

The doll has a quiet, restrained expression, with fine eye lines, a small face and a striking hairstyle with deeply carved fan or pinwheel-like detailing. The horizontal carved lines on the body and the wide band across the chest add texture and depth to the piece.

Dimensions: height 17 cm, diameter 12 cm.

A characterful collector’s piece within the Japanese sōsaku kokeshi tradition, also beautiful as a subtle decorative accent in a stylish interior. Marked on the underside with the artist’s stamp.

Condition: light signs of use consistent with age; well preserved and decoratively strong.
