Vintage Sōsaku Kokeshi by Miyashita Hajime, 1970s

Authentic vintage sōsaku kokeshi by Miyashita Hajime, an award-winning Japanese kokeshi artist from Gunma. The wooden doll has a sober cylindrical form with a large black okappa hairstyle, fine eye lines and a soft, understated expression.

Dimensions: height 19 cm, diameter 9 cm.

The dark kimono is hand-decorated with stylised floral motifs in deep red, purple and gold-toned accents. At the front, the hand-carved red bow stands out beautifully, giving the piece a playful yet refined character. The combination of dark wood, graphic floral work and subtle relief gives this kokeshi a warm decorative presence.

A characterful collector’s piece within the Japanese sōsaku kokeshi tradition, beautiful as a small Japanese interior accent or as an addition to a kokeshi collection.
