Vintage Sōsaku Kokeshi by Suigai Sato – Japan, 1960s

This elegant sōsaku kokeshi was designed by the renowned artist Suigai Sato and is signed on the bottom with his red name stamp (hanko). The doll stands out for its graceful, stylized silhouette and serene facial expression.

The slender body is subtly adorned with a contrasting black obi featuring white chrysanthemums, and finely incised motifs of wheat stalks near the base—an homage to the natural beauty of the Japanese countryside. The restrained colour palette and clean lines lend this kokeshi a timeless, modern character.

The kokeshi is in excellent condition and represents a beautiful example of the balance between tradition and modern aesthetics.
