Vintage Sōsaku Kokeshi of Fukurokuju, ca. 1960–1980
Dimensions: height 41 cm, diameter 14 cm.
An exceptional Japanese sōsaku kokeshi representing Fukurokuju, one of Japan’s Seven Lucky Gods and traditionally associated with happiness, prosperity, wisdom and longevity.
The kokeshi is carved from a single piece of wood and has a strikingly elongated head, the most recognisable physical feature of Fukurokuju. The lower section depicts the lucky god with a friendly smiling face, long earlobes and a finely rendered beard. His robes are hand-painted in warm reddish-brown and black tones.
The artist left most of the wood undecorated, allowing its natural golden-brown colour and subtle grain to remain beautifully visible. The combination of its monumental silhouette, simplified form and graphic painted decoration gives the object a strong sculptural presence.
Fukurokuju belongs to the Shichifukujin, the Seven Lucky Gods of Japanese folk tradition. His exceptionally high forehead symbolises wisdom and longevity. Images of Fukurokuju are traditionally associated with wellbeing, good fortune and a prosperous life.
Standing 41 cm high, this kokeshi makes a distinctive decorative object on a cabinet, shelf or central display. It is particularly attractive as part of a collection of Japanese folk art, sōsaku kokeshi or representations of the Seven Lucky Gods.
The underside bears an artist’s signature.
In very good vintage condition, with light signs of use and natural variations in the wood consistent with its age and handcrafted production.
A rare and highly characterful Japanese kokeshi combining traditional symbolism with modern sculptural design.
