Vintage Tanuki Tokkuri, Sake Bottle – Japan, ca. 1980s
A characterful ceramic tanuki figure that functions as a sake bottle (tokkuri), made in Japan in the 1980s.
Dimensions: height 27 cm, width 17 cm, depth 17 cm
This decorative object is inspired by the folklore surrounding the tanuki – the mythical Japanese raccoon dog, symbolizing good fortune, abundance, and playfulness.
This particular tanuki was produced as a promotional item for a well-known Japanese sake brewery. In one hand, it holds a sake bottle marked with the characters 神聖, which can be translated as “sacred” or “spiritual purity.” In the other hand, it carries a traditional account ledger inscribed with 信運, meaning “trust in fortune” or “prosperity through faith.”
A beautiful and functional piece with strong vintage appeal – perfect for a Japanese-style interior or sake collection.
