Rare Japanese Root Sculpture – Lacquered Wood, ca. 1940s
A rare and striking piece of Japanese antique rootwood, expertly lacquered and polished to a lustrous finish that beautifully accentuates its rich, organic forms.
Dimensions (approx.): 56 cm x 140 cm x 80 cm.
Weight: ± 20 kg
This unique object originates from Japan and was traditionally used as an interior decoration in both homes and teahouses. Known as sokkuboku (decorative root sculptures), such pieces express a deep appreciation for the raw beauty of nature.
The wood is likely from either the camphor tree (kusu) or Japanese zelkova (keyaki) – both highly valued in Japan for their durability, intricate grain patterns, and aesthetic appeal. The lacquer finish enhances the wood’s natural color and provides a protective coating that preserves its condition over time.
Thanks to its organic form, this rootwood sculpture can be displayed in various orientations – upright, lying flat, or at an angle – depending on your space and design vision. It serves perfectly as a statement piece in a wabi-sabi interior, or as a sculptural accent in ikebana arrangements, where the contrast between the natural wood and floral elements creates a harmonious composition.
