Japanese Low Table, Black Lacquer, Chinkin Gold Decoration, 1970s

This elegant Japanese low table combines deep black lacquer with exceptionally refined chinkin decoration (沈金): finely incised lines filled with gold. The motif features stylised pine needles (matsuba), arranged in a rhythmic, graphic pattern that forms a golden frame around the tabletop. In Japan, the pine is a classic symbol of steadfastness, longevity, and elegance. The overall effect is both serene and powerful, with a distinctly luxurious presence.

A separate glass top sits above the lacquer to protect the surface. Both the lacquered tabletop and the glass show light signs of use consistent with age, but these are not distracting in everyday use and leave the character of the piece fully intact.
