Kokeshi with Mino by Shidō Shōzan, 1960s, Japan
A Japanese creative kokeshi from the 1960s, crafted by renowned artist Shidō Shōzan (1932–1995).
Dimensions: H 20 × Ø 8 cm.
The wooden figure wears a 'mino', a traditional Japanese cape made from woven straw.
The pointed cape is carved entirely from wood. Its fine relief imitates the texture of woven straw. The dark brown tones contrast beautifully with the warm natural wood and the subtly painted kimono.
Shidō Shōzan was an important figure in the Japanese sōsaku kokeshi movement. His work received numerous awards, including the prestigious Prime Minister's Award.
This example bears the artist's impressed stamp on the underside.
In lovely vintage condition, with a warm natural patina and light signs of age.
A distinctive decorative collector's piece that brings together Japanese craftsmanship, simplicity and natural materials. A beautiful addition for lovers of Japanese art and kokeshi collectors.
