Set Kokeshi by Sansaku Sekiguchi, 1970s, Japan
A charming set Japanese creative kokeshi from the 1970s, by the renowned artist Sansaku Sekiguchi (1925–2018).
Dimensions of the larger figure: H 18 × Ø 8 cm.
Both wooden figures feature beautifully rounded forms and wear wide, conical hats inspired by traditional Japanese kasa hats. The hats are carefully carved from wood and finished with fine concentric lines that evoke the texture of woven material.
Their bodies are crafted in warm, natural wood tones and decorated with subtle floral motifs, soft brown hues and delicate red accents. Their serene expressions and visible wood grain give both figures a particularly warm and charming appearance.
Sansaku Sekiguchi was one of the leading artists of the Japanese creative kokeshi tradition. His work is admired for its original designs, refined woodcarving and attention to traditional Japanese clothing details.
The larger figure bears the artist's Japanese signature on the back.
In lovely vintage condition, with minor signs of age. The larger kokeshi has a small, old repair to its wooden hat, which is barely noticeable and does not detract from its decorative appeal.
A particularly appealing pair for collectors of Japanese kokeshi art and a charming decorative accent for a contemporary interior.
