Tansu Chest with Four Drawers, c. 1900, Japan
A beautiful antique Japanese tansu from the early 20th century, crafted from natural wood with a warm patina and distinctive black iron fittings.
Dimensions: H 96 × W 83 × D 42 cm.
The chest is constructed as a single piece and features four spacious drawers, with a deeper drawer at the bottom. Each drawer front is fitted with a large circular lock plate, two sturdy iron handles and decorative corner reinforcements. Original iron carrying handles are mounted on both sides.
Particularly striking is the natural ageing of the wood. The light honey-coloured tones and expressive wood grain create a beautiful contrast with the dark iron fittings. Beneath the metalwork, deep, dark discolouration has developed and gradually penetrated the wood over the years. These subtly flowing marks give the chest an exceptionally beautiful, timeworn character.
The four drawers provide generous storage for clothing, textiles, documents and other personal belongings. The spacious top also offers an ideal surface for displaying ceramics, art objects or a beautiful vase.
In lovely antique condition, with authentic signs of age and use that contribute to its remarkable patina.
A timeless Japanese storage piece that brings together simplicity, functionality and natural beauty. A warm and characterful addition to a contemporary interior.
