Vintage Gumma Kokeshi by Yuji Kawase, 1970s

This characterful vintage Kokeshi doll was crafted by Yuji Kawase, a renowned artisan from the Gunma region, born in 1938.

Dimensions: height 17 cm, diameter 5.5 cm. In very good condition.

She is a beautiful example of the Gumma style, known for its understated elegance and refined, symmetrical form.

The kimono is hand-painted with colourful flowers in deep shades of blue, yellow, red, and green. Part of the decoration is executed using the pyrography technique, adding texture and depth to the surface. A graceful red bow on the front serves as a refined visual accent.

The original signature of Yuji Kawase is marked on the back — an authentic detail that makes this Kokeshi a valuable collector’s piece.
