Vintage Kokeshi – “Goddess of Mercy” by Kato Kuen, 1960s
This exceptional, elongated kokeshi doll represents Kannon, the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy. As a Bodhisattva, Kannon chose to postpone her own enlightenment in order to remain behind and aid all those who suffer — a symbol of boundless compassion and spiritual devotion.
Height: 34.5 cm
Special feature: hidden compartment with prayer scroll.
The piece was crafted by Kato Kuen, a priest of the Kannon-ji Temple on sacred Mount Koya — the spiritual heart of Japanese Buddhism and its most important pilgrimage site. Kato Kuen was not only a temple priest but also a member of the Japanese imperial family, adding further significance to this remarkable work.
A unique detail: the bottom of the kokeshi is hollow and can be opened to reveal a hidden compartment, designed to hold a prayer scroll or a personal written wish. This makes her a true secret keeper — a guardian of silent hopes, prayers, and devotion.
A rare and soulful collector’s item that brings a layer of quiet spirituality to any space.
