Creative Kokeshi by Sato Kōson, 1960s, Japan
A rare Japanese sōsaku kokeshi by Sato Kōson, distinguished by its vibrant colours and traditional woodcarving.
Dimensions: H 45 cm × Ø 14 cm.
This large wooden kokeshi is characterised by its elegant silhouette and richly decorated kimono in deep shades of red and black. The surface has a subtly speckled texture and is adorned with large, stylised Japanese plum blossoms (ume), their graceful branches extending across the body.
The blossoms are partly hand-painted and partly meticulously carved into the wood. The incised outlines and fine, radiating lines of the stamens create a delicate relief, adding remarkable depth to the floral composition.
The underside bears the handwritten signature of Sato Kōson.
In beautiful vintage condition, with a natural patina and minor signs of age.
With its generous proportions, refined carvings and bold use of colour, this kokeshi is an exceptionally decorative and collectible example of Japanese folk art.
A sculptural piece with a distinctive character and timeless elegance.
