Japanese Bamboo Ikebana Basket with Arched Handle, 1960s

Decorative, handwoven bamboo basket from Japan, originally used as an ikebana or gathering basket.

Dimensions: height 62 cm, diameter 30 cm.

The basket is made from sturdy bamboo strips in warm honey to chestnut brown tones, with a rhythmic weave of horizontal, slightly curved slats over vertical uprights. The rim is finished with a braided border and a tall, slender arched handle that gives the basket an elegant vertical silhouette.

The basket is in good, solid condition with light ageing and natural colour variations in the bamboo, consistent with its age.

Beautiful styled with branches or dried flowers, but also strong enough to stand alone as a sculptural object in a wabi-sabi or Japanese-inspired interior.
