Japanese Lacquered Tana — Display Shelving with Mother-of-Pearl (Raden), c. 1915
Elegant early-20th-century Japanese lacquer tana with two shelves, finished in deep black urushi. The plinth is richly decorated with scattered mother-of-pearl chips (aogai-chirashi) that shimmer softly, while the corners are accented with precise mother-of-pearl inlay.
A restrained, luxurious piece—perfect for presenting ceramics, tea utensils, or small objects.
Dimensions: height 71 cm, width 66 cm, depth 36 cm.
In good, authentic condition with age patina: minor lacquer losses and edge wear (see photos).
The piece embodies the wabi-sabi aesthetic—quietness, simplicity, and material poetry.
A timeless accent for a living room, tokonoma, or gallery; pairs beautifully with porcelain, ikebana, plants, or contemporary ceramics.
