Japanese Wooden Wall Panels (Former Door Panels), Set of 2, c. 1890
This authentic set of two Japanese door panels from around 1890 makes a surprisingly strong decorative wall feature today: restrained, graphic, and rich with lived-in texture.
Dimensions: height 85 cm, width 91.5 cm, depth 2 cm (each panel).
Each panel is made from solid wood with a sturdy frame and horizontal rails that bring rhythm and calm to the composition. The front has a deep dark-brown to near-black patina, with warmer reddish-brown tones emerging along the edges and through the grain. Up close, you’ll notice subtle variations in sheen, pronounced wood grain, and small traces of use that are exactly what makes pieces like this so appealing.
A strong detail is the original ironwork: one panel still has its metal key escutcheon, while the other shows the old recess where the lock hardware once sat.
Perfect as wall panels: hang them as a diptych, side by side, or separately. They also look great simply leaned against a wall, creating an immediate impact—especially as a backdrop for ceramics, ikebana, or art.
Condition: solid and in good overall condition with age-appropriate patina and wear; a few old recesses and wear marks are present, but the set is stable and highly decorative.
